Naxos Town, lively and romantic

You are currently viewing Naxos Town, lively and romantic

Naxos Town or Chora, the capital of the island, is among the few island towns that provide so many tourist attractions concentrated in such a limited area. There is a lot to see and do without having to walk long distances each time. This is why the capital of Naxos remains the tourist centre of the island.

The Historic Naxos Town

History is the focal point of Naxos Town. One can realize that while entering its port. To the left there is Portara, the huge marble gate that you cannot miss. As the boat approaches the pier, the impressive medieval Castle of Naxos Town is what gives it its unique historical character. It can be clearly seen in all its glory. Within its walls you may enjoy various artistic festivals and exhibitions.

The Old Town of Naxos, with its famous Old Market, is perhaps the most lively part of the town. It owes its popularity to the many and beautiful restaurants, bars, cafés and shops (selling clothes, souvenirs and local artwork). The decoration has been thought in great detail and the result will not let you down.

But, if it is the modern side of the town that you prefer, there is also plenty to do. You can start from the numerous cafés and pastry shops. Some offer great sea view of the port, the large marina and the tiny islet that holds the chapel of Panagia Myrtidiotissa. Some others are located among the town’s picturesque alleys. It is there that you may taste the famous and aromatic Citron liqueur of Naxos, on its own or in a cocktail.

You might also want to consider visiting the Sanctuary of Dionysus (best known as Yria Temple), the Archaeological Museum of Naxos (located within the Castle), the Catholic Cathedral and the churches Panagia Pantanassa and Panagia Myrtidiotissa.

For more relaxed holidays

Walking along the paralia (the port promenade) is, perhaps, the most preferred activity on the whole island. During high season, vehicles are not allowed there. The road is available for a care-free walks alongside the most amazing view. Walk next to fishing boats, sailing boats and yachts on one side and the Old Town on the other. If that is not romantic, then what is?

During the evening, unlike the areas near the port, Saint George beach is being transformed into an idyllic holiday resort. It is mostly appreciated by those who prefer a quiet dinner or a romantic drink accompanied by the sound of the water, splashing on the fine sand.

For all romantic souls, we have created a special “Sunset Tour”, taking place each evening as long as the weather permits it. Our captains will be waiting for you on Filitsa I and Filitsa II, with a bottle of Moët champagne or a bottle of special Santorinian wine and fresh fruit. You get to choose which drink you prefer. We will show you the sunset from a privileged point of view.
